Chess is the oldest known game still played today.
The game was born in ancient times in India.
From there the game spread to Persia, and then to the Moslems, and then on to Europe.
In the middle of the 11th century it was a very popular game among the aristocracy
in Spain, Italy and Germany.
During the middle ages the game underwent many rule changes and
it was not until the 16th century the game took on its modern form.
Today chess is still one of the most enjoyable and exciting games.

Correspondence and email chess
Correspondence and email chess is an almost ideal way to play chess since you do not have to play an entire game in one "sitting".
This also gives you more time to reflect on a move before making it.
Correspondence chess normally refers to the use of postal snail-mail.
Email chess is naturally faster.
But we offer an even better chess alternative!

The Chess Machine
Give it a try! Can you beat it ? Don't get roasted!
It is a unique chess program with a unique style.
This online chess program runs on a fast server and it uses less than one CPU second per move.
In its previous incarnation this was the Newton ChessPro
program for the handheld Newton device. The Newton ChessPro version was
written in NewtonScript which ran VERY slowly and thus had limited
playing strength.
The current version is written in C++ and it is compiled native
so it plays a much better chess game :-)
The first incarnation of this chess program over 20 years ago was written
in binary assembly for a home built Z80 based single board computer
which you can see in the picture!
